Machair There is nothing but the machair and the sea. The guests of the hotel, mainly senior bus tourists, were wandering along the beach searching for seals in the sea. Machair is the important geographical term here. Wikipedia says, "The Gaelic word machair or machar refers to a fertile, low-lying, grassy plain found on some of the north-west coastlines of Ireland and Scotland".
