"William Hogarth's House"
Here I saw the engravings, the series of "The Rake's Progress", with its moral captions. I had seen the original oil in Sir John Soane's Museum, London a couple years ago and at that time I couldn't understand its allegorical context. When I went out from the house and was painting this picture beside the service entrance, the gardener explained to me about the ancient tree in front of the house. From this tree the Hogarths are said to have made mulberry pies for the foundling children who stayed with them. |
